#30DayMapChallenge 2021 Recap — The Final Part
The Holy Month for Mapmakers
I’m both excited and sad to complete the #30DayMapChallenge
when I already used to make maps every day, it’s like MotoGP riders constantly keeping their high race pace lap by lap since free practice but must finish the race because they (either DNF, just crossing the finish line, scoring points, or even reaching the podium) have to move to the next race weekend.
I said well prepared in the first part because I’ve anticipated that will be another #30DayMapChallenge
. So when Topi Tjukanov announced the daily themes, I immediately organized a new page and event calendar in my personal Notion. It’s helped me a lot in terms of managing ideas, time and resources (thanks to Notion 👍).
Just remind, the challenge was initiated by Topi Tjukanov in 2019 to create and publish maps with a different theme each day (listed below) using the hashtag #30DayMapChallenge
on social media.
Once again, this article is better to read on a computer, the maps look more standout there.
Day 21 — Elevation
I made the bathymetry data from a hydrographic survey at Gili Ketapang in April 2018 (actually from early February if include the brainstorming, budgeting, making the sounding-track plan, etc.) during my v̶e̶r̶y̶ ̶b̶a̶d̶ ̶d̶a̶y̶s̶ undergraduate thesis days using a single-beam echosounder. Despite technical and non-technical issues causing the data distortion, in a way it still has an important sentimental value for me.
The eastern and southern parts of the island are covered with a lot of floating marine cages which are randomly placed around the coast. It makes the result is somewhat inaccurate when compared to my sounding-track plan since our vessel had to make maneuvers to avoid them. The weather that day is unpredictable as well, make the vessel is difficult to move steady straight due to high waves. Oh why there is so much drama on that period🤦♂️.

Day 22 — Boundaries
If we take a closer look, instead of being a straight vertical line, there is a ‘bite’ between the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border and the bottom part is a bit moved to the east. Why did it happen? Well, this is the reason behind it.

Day 23 — Data Challenge 3 : Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL)
Indonesia, where most of the territory is interconnected by water should be able to take advantage of this opportunity to adapt the concept of urban waterfront development to its cities.
I can say this is one of the most demanding content in the challenge because I should make 9 different maps (10 if include cover). Moreover, the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) data is quite heavy, although I’ve clipped it based on the Area of Interest (AOI) which is the city administrative boundaries.
About the maps, you can find a lot of red areas which means the (rapid) development started in the 2000s, sadly in Jayapura (Papua) most of them are NULL.
GHSL project produces global spatial information about the human presence on the planet over time.

Day 24 — Historical Map
As a Nusantara history enthusiast, I was wondering which part of the history is nice to turn into a map, then I remember the words from a king in the past and try to merge them with geospatial data.
In the 12th century, Jayabaya, a King from the kingdom of Kediri made one of his famous prophecies. He said, “Tanah Jawa Bakal Kalungan Wesi” (The island of Java will be circled by an iron necklace), this map is fully my personal thought about it.
I made it based on this tutorial and some other references but the result is not good as I expected. Well, better than never 😅.

Day 25 — Interactive Map
I’m using population density from Humanitarian Data Exchange with MAPID’s geospatial platform called GEO MAPID to visualize the data, including SINI for location profiling to obtain any other insight in a specific area that I want to observe.
Recently I’ve realized that the ease of creating, accessing and integrating the geospatial data through any kind of gadget immersively is important. Personally, the platform already provides what I need if I act as an end user.
For example, I’ll build a coffee shop in Surabaya, so I use this map with a geomarketing strategy to find the best location. For sure, the red areas will be top of the list, but location profiling with SINI helps to define the market segment and clarify the target market. Such as age, gender, type of jobs, annual/monthly income and even land prices.

Day 26 — Choropleth Map
Yes, it’s true the data is from the previous day and by the way it’s actually my old bivariate choropleth map with some adjustments.
As one of the big cities in Indonesia, obviously Surabaya has to face spatial chaos (kesemrawutan tata ruang) between people and buildings. Ironically, sometimes it can be a business opportunity as well (as I explained on day 25), yet if we continue this behavior then the sustainable development goals are hard to achieve.

Day 27 — Heatmap
The data was recorded during the election period in Indonesia from 2015–2019. There’s a lot of tension, IMHO everything starts from the black campaign from the mass media and the worst is through social media’s hoax ended up with hate speech. Until the mighty Cebong & Kampret army was born.
What I thought? honestly, I’m not really into it, especially those that make people do toxic to each other. I hope in the future we don’t just have two presidential candidates that lead to political polarization, 2016 & 2019 was bad enough to happen again.
The darker color in the map indicates that political conflict events are often happening in the area.

Day 28 — The Earth Is Not Flat
Indonesia is the country with the most active volcanoes in the world (127, based on the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources), since Indonesia is located between two massive tectonic plates and as part of the pacific ring of fire. Merapi on Central Java is the most active volcano, whereas the eruption of Tambora in 1815 was the biggest in the modern era with 7 of Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI). Yet Kelud eruption in 2014 was certainly the most memorable for me (look at my 10th day map).
This is my first time using unfolded.ai for data visualization, I think they developed it based on the kepler.gl engine because of the dashboard and user interface similarity, which is (IMHO) a little bit not user friendly for a noob. Hovering your mouse cursor to a specific volcano’s Point of Interest (POI) will bring an information pop up.

Day 29 — NULL
Jombang is strategically located in the middle part of East Java, it’s crossed by a toll road that connects big cities from the west part of Java to the east (Surabaya). For those who don’t know, the blank spaces are buildings or man made objects, then the green parts I’m pretty sure they are other vegetation and (mostly) croplands.

Day 30 — Metamapping Day
Ah, we finally arrived on the 30th day…
I was confused, my blog post about how to make a multivariate choropleth map is actually the last day content. Unfortunately, the article is still in Bahasa Indonesia, maybe next time I will make the English version of it or (maybe) another content in English occasionally. However, these three part highlights are still categorized as Metamapping Day content as well! B̶u̶t̶ ̶i̶t̶’̶s̶ ̶n̶o̶t̶ ̶v̶a̶l̶i̶d̶ ̶s̶i̶n̶c̶e̶ ̶I̶ ̶m̶a̶d̶e̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶s̶i̶d̶e̶ ̶N̶o̶v̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ 😅.
